Wedding dress
Posted by TCP (246 days ago)
Hi
I am a UK size 14 and am looking for a shop that has expat style wedding dresses in sizes that I would be able to fit into to see what style of dress would suit me.
As I do not wear wedding dresses often I cannot ask someone to make me a particular style with out knowing what looks best.
The only ones I have found in hk have had 'try on' dresses in a size 2 and while this is very funny for my friends to watch me try and squish into them unsuccessfully, I am getting a little worried now.
If anyone can suggest a shop I would be VERY grateful!

What is an "expat style wedding dress"?

Expat style wedding dress would be a bit more simple that the ones I have seen over here. ie just white strapless mermaid tail, etc. Wedding dresses over here can come in all colours, with beading, bells, pearls, lace, diamonte, bell bottomed, long sleeved etc.

Ah, just wondered...because 'expat' covers a wide range of nationalities in a place like HK. That's still a unique definition, though, because it's a matter of personal taste. The shops in Kimberly Road have some 'plain' as well as 'frothy' (both my descriptions) dresses, as do the shops in the Metropolis Mall next to the Hung Hom KCR station. Good luck - with both the dress and the wedding.

Hi AimeeJ,
Sorry to say it has been a disaster! Have found one dress shop that had two dresses I could squeeze into but neither were preferable. Trousseau - 2-10 Lyndhurst Terrace - 2546 0085.
I am going to Australia for X'mas so am going to hunt over there and either buy one off the rack and get it fitted over here or just get it made from scratch over here from a website photo. However was quoted 20k to make it from Noel Chu (the dress was USD$345 online!)
If you have any better luck please let me know or if you know a wedding dress tailor again...please let me know!
Sorry don't have better news.

Sorry AimeeJ
You gave me a new lease of life and I have just called one place on Wyndham street who claim to have try on dresses up to size US 20! Bride felice. Wyndham street. 2147 3388.
I will let you know if it is good as will be there today at 1!

Hi
Dress was ok, depends what you want. Nothing there for me unfortunately.
How was Commix? and where are they?

Commix - 3a Wing Tat Commercial Building ,121-125 Wing Lok Street http://www.commixworkshop.com/
I didn't find anything from their stock but I am awaiting a quote on a design I had drawn up - though I am not filled with confidence....
Am also seeing Althea Valorous (Stanley Street 2111 3700) and Anaiss (Lan Kwai Fong 2522 2030) next week for quotes on having something made.
Frustratingly, all I want is a good dress maker who could make a very structured dress (boned). They don't have to be a wedding specialist as my dress is not particularly weddingy anyway.

Thanks.
I know how you you feel. I am also looking for a boned corset dress. They do not seem to do it in any dresses. I am also looking for more of evening dress rather than big wedding dress.
Been to Anaiss, they were lovely but must warn you though I have read that they were late at delivering etc so if you use them order early.
When and where are you getting married. So nice to know I am not alone in this nightmare of a hunt. also did you just find a design that you think would suit you or are you copying something that you tried on?

I strongly recommend: Lusan Mandongus 28154592/28514827 2-3/F, 18 Wing Lok St., Sheung Wan. I got mine made there and had lots of compliments on my wedding day. I have also recommended the shop to several friends who got married since my wedding. A lovely collection all at reasonable prices. Very elegant and stylish - without being over the top.

Thanks Havefaith - I went on there today - the collection is very good and they are ultra helpful - loads of choice and some lovely dresses, however they don't make from scratch, they will only heavily modify the dresses they carry, which are mostly ordered from UK/Europe. Any modifications cost extra (even if you want no beading and want it to be shorter).
TCP, I went to The Wedding Shop as well - they carry a lot of Jenny Packham, which only looks good if you are stick thin, as well as other designers - the lead time can be a while. (I need one by March).
I also went to Anaiss - they had good stock and as before, don't make from scratch but will heavily modify what they have - again, lead time is long, but they were very helpful, but couldn't find what I wanted.
Finally (I've been busy today!), I went to Athena Valorus - the lady seemed to know what she was talking about and was happy to make something from the designs I had had drawn up already. They also have a ready to wear section and were very helpful and more reasonable costs - they must have local seamstresses or something which keeps the price down as opposed to ordering from Europe. So far this one seems the most promising.
How are you getting on?

TCP - also, in answer to your original question, I'd say that the places I went to today probably only stock up to a size 10 UK - I know it's difficult to guess what it really looks like when you are being held in by bulldog clips!!

TCP - an update - I think I am going to use Matador Couture (tel:28778663 1/F, Dotcom Hse, 128 Wellington Street). Their quote is reasonable and they do everything in house so the designers and pattern cutters are all there so there's no to-ing and fro-ing to get stuff altered.
Also, their ready to wear collection for evening dresses was the best I have seen so far, which is reassuring.
How are you getting on? If you're getting invites done here I can tell you where NOT to go (4 weeks in and the proof still isn't correct....)

Hi there,
That sounds great will check them out. I have a better idea on style etc now so am getting it made. Was going to Noel Chu but think they are a bit expensive.
Got the invites printed and had a bit of a polava with a company called Good Day...not sure if that is who you used?
Not sure if you are inviting people from around the world but we have set up a website on weddingwindow.com, everyone has said it is awesome. We have hotels, travel info, wedding party details, etc. really good, you should check it out!
