Hey guys, can anyone help me. I'm planning to take the train north this summer. I've done it once before, but not on my own. My mother is worried about a single woman travelling by train for 36 hours on her own. I know enough Chinese, so that won't be a huge problem. Also, I know not to take anything of value in my bag and any money (not much) and the like will be on my physical person at all times. Is my mom just freaking out, or should i fly (which is 4x more expensive when all is said and done)?
I've done lots of long distance trains on my own in different countries and have to say i always feel more comfortable going hard sleeper cos the corridor is open. Sure it's more noisy but if anything happened everyone around would know about it too.
Got gassed and robbed in a compartment on an overnight train in Germany 15 years ago - it's put me off the closed compartments (like soft seeper) for life!! But not put me off overnight trains so I'd still go for it.
