Blue Screen of Death
Posted by DFWATTS (18 days ago)
All,
I need help.
My computer, which was in excellent health when shipped from the UK one month ago, has slowly deteriorated over the past month and is now virtually unuseable.
The computer is less than one year old, DELL branded, and I keep getting the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH appear. It's running Windows Vista.
I have read various forums and suggestions of holding F8 and re-booting to a 'last known good configiration' etc., but these simply don't work as even in safe mode the computer re-starts itself after a short period of time.
Does anybody have any advice here? Is there anybody I can take this to or somewhere I can take it to get this sorted out? Perhaps I can sort this myself by restoring the computer to factory settings?
Any help would be most appreciated as I am, slowly but surely, losing the will to live!
Many thanks.

""computer re-starts itself after a short period of time.""
First thought - is it due to fan(s) not working.
It'll certainly overheat & then re-start.... ad nauseum.
This is more prevalent on Laptops -- & -- you've left all readers wondering if you are complaining about a Laptop -- or a Desktop. <Wry smile>.
**IF* you P.M. me with your e'mail address - I could point you to more info.

Apologies, it's a desktop PC.
Any help would be appreciated as it's the only real link I have to my family in the UK at weekends!
Many thanks.

HAve you tried restoring to a previous configuration with "System Restore"? Might help.
Otherwise it could be plenty of things. The first thing to check would be that all the fans are working. Could be a wonky power supply, a problematic driver... Have you installed anything new laterly?

I have tried restoring it to factory settings last night, but unfortunately that did not work either and now the computer won't boot up as it says the 'boot drive' (or something like that) is not found.
Need to take it somewhere where they can repair this for me.
Any ideas where I can get this done?

It would be helpful to know *where* your 'puter resides.... after all, if anyone was to suggest a fantastic place in Sheung Shui, and you live in Tai O - I'm 99.9% certain that the info wouldn't be of much use to you. <Grin>.
I must admit that I'm bemused at your "Coals to Newcastle" - when there's much better value for money computers available in HK.
As for your problem(s) - It would seem that your "Viagra" [Hard] Drive is no longer bootable - possibly it is recoverable with "FDISK" program option of "Set Bootable Partition" **ACTIVE**.
At the worst - your HD boot cylinder is damaged & the only way to "see" the disk is from a bootable device such as a floppy - and that requires that the HD isn't formatted as NTFS !
Don't you just wish you'd left it in UK and got a new one here. <Grin>.
Never despair, with lashing of money almost anything can be resolved. <Chuckle>

Hi! i think you may be able to fix your problem if you use the "FIXBOOT" command if you boot from your CD. Insert your Windows bootble CD and set your PC to 1st boot CD drive. Once booted from the CD, you should find two options. Install Windows, Fix Windows. Go for the Fix Windows.
I forgot the next options after that but try to find the option for HELP. Then it should give you several commands on what you can do. Then simply type FIXBOOT.
I've done late last year when my hardisk crashed and kept restarting. And I made the mistake of formatting it. And a day later I read the Fix Boot solution. I was able to get my harisk to work again and plan on recovering the files in drive C. But so far I never had the time to do it. So I decided to upgrade my PC and use the current one as slave disk. Just sharing my experience.
I hope my post could help you. BTW, the solution above is for an XP OS. But it should be the same for Vista.
Good Luck
