desktop pc spec recommendations

Im looking to purchase a new desktop computer, my current one is now pretty outdated.
Along with all the usual email/word/excel stuff I do, I specifically want a spec which has high performance to play all the latest games - appreciate some advise on what sort of motherboard, memory, graphics card and brand names to buy (want to clone my own rather than out of a box - believe you get better value for money and customised)
Also, wheres the best place to buy this sort of stuff in HK - I know a couple of places in Wanchai - are these the best (for high end computer equipment?)

Hi, my suggestion is not exactly what you are asking but.... Have you thought about getting a laptop instead of a desktop? These days they are as powerful if not more than desktops. I use my laptop for pretty heavy graphics and I don't know really what to do with my desktop because at the rate the new ones come out- there is not much resale value left in a 2yr old desktop. Plus you can move laptops around, connect them to your TV- specially if you want to play games.

Hi 788, I have a laptop already which is good for portability etc.
However I believe you get better value for money for higher performance with a desktop (for laptop the higher cost partly goes into making the parts smaller).

Hi Drivelmaster.
I'd recommend taking a trip to the Golden Centre in Sham Shui Po. There you will find 2 floors of computer shops, all willing and able to make a computer from whatever parts you like. They are also able to advise on what spec too.
The prices are slightly cheeper than HK side,as you can imagine the ratio of "Local HK people" is much higher. There are quite a few "Computer Chains" in the Centre too. You can either get their advice and then buy all the components or they will build it all for you.
I have been using theis place for over 10 years. I always buy parts and build my own too.

If gaming is important a laptop is not the best choice. You can always upgrade your desktop components as the latest and greatest hardware comes out. You can't do that with a laptop.

Hmmm... makes sense Drivelmaster and good point Idldjr. I won't look down upon my desktop as much anymore. It was top of the line in 2005- when I thought of selling it before we moved to HK last year, the value on it was so low... that I brought it along with us.

Dell XPS seems like a good spec, it was designed for gaming purpose.

The Dell XPS is a nice gaming rig, but if I recall correctly, the XPS would set you back at least $15,000.
I would highly advise you to build your own PC instead.
What is the size of your monitor? If you are using a 22 inch or less, a $2,200 nVidia 8800GTS 320MB display card should do the job just fine.

Hi all, thanks for all the feedback.
I checked out the XPS, great spec (very expensive for the higher specs) but give me some good pointers on what I wanted to build my own.
Finally settled on the following:-
- Intel Core Duo E6700 2.67G 4M 1066MHZ
- Asus P5K P35 chipset
- G-Skill DDR2 CL4 (2x1GB)
- Seagate 500GB hardDisk (SATA/16M)
- Pionner DVD-R/RW
- Winfast PX8800GTS 320MB (using 17" screen)
- Cooler Master CAC-T05 case
- Cooler Master RP-650W Power Supply
- Tuniq Tower 120 (cooler) with Artic Silver 5
- Windows XP - original(OEM)
I also found an excellent website (www.newegg.com) where you can type in each of the names of the components and it brings up pictures and customer feedback with ratings - extremely interesting & informative - also reassuring.
Whole thing cost about HK$10k which was just on the budget.
Am thinking of adding a decent sounds card and some speakers - anyone recommend a good 2:1 set?

Altec Lansing is good. Am using the ATP 3 Altec Lansing at work, it's 2.1 but old model..sound is good, am sure its good for gaming too.

Someone suggesting a gaming computer without a Sound Card, a sad sad day in tech consultation.
Other then that it is an OK system for gaming not for your wallet.
17" screen with a 8800 is a waste also get 21" at least at 1ms latency.
And if your a gamer get a cut down version of XP theres 300mb of fat on that thing.
