Desperate for 'ice' hockey
Posted by Sensrule (402 days ago)
I am technologically inept, so I'm not sure if this exists...but someone once told me he was able to watch TV from his home country here in HK. Is this possible? I am desperate to watch the NHL playoffs back in Canada. It's virtually impossible to watch it in HK. Thanks

Thanks Ed. According to the website, I would have to install a slingbox on a television in Canada. It doesn't seem like much use for me to install it over here. Is this right?

If there are any other hockey starved Canucks out there, we should all try to find some sort of solution. This has gone on far too long.
I may be able to get my brother to install a slingbox on his televison. We need a venue to watch it in and access to broadband. Let's do this!

I was lucky enough to be at the Sens game on Wednesday and trying to get to Saturday afternoon game:) But back in HK soon...
Yes, slingbox works well in HK. You can also download the game afterwards using bittorrent.
I think the Keg in LKF is showing games same-day. Hard to find a place to watch live via slingbox as many games are on at 7am.
I offered my slingbox last year but had no takers to open a place at that time during the first few rounds. Might've been able find a place for the finals but I was travelling in Asia and I was using my slingbox while I was away (and only one person can access it).
Stop into the Keg and see what games they're showing. I'll be there for a few games after I get back to HK.

TMK,
Great to know there's another Sens fan in HK. Give me a shout when you get back to HK so we can watch some hockey!

Sensrule,
I think I found a way for you to watch games in HK. CBC's new TV contract for the next six years was signed last week and includes live streaming of games for the duration of the contract.
The good news is they've started streaming right away at www.cbc.ca.
Bad news is it is probably blocked outside Canada. Give it a try at www.cbc.ca. If you are blocked, try the following:
You can probably use a proxy server located in Canada to access the game in HK. You can google proxy and canada to find a proxy server, but I've found one for you. Give this a try:
go to www.freeproxy.ca
At the http:// prompt in the middle of the page, type cbc.ca
You'll have to navigate through the cbc website to the playoffs, and look for the live stream link. It's working fine for me through the proxy server. Then again I'm in Ottawa this week so can't say for sure that it will work in HK. Should work though as the proxy server is in Canada.
I believe using a proxy server can slow down your connection, and some proxy servers may be faster than others. If it isn't working very well, perhaps try a different proxy server.

TMK,
Thanks for the tip. However, I gave it a try and it doesn't seem to work. I even tried watching archived games, but to no avail.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

TMK,
Just tried it again, and it worked!!
You are a genius, my friend.
Watched the first period, and now watching Don Cherry shooting his mouth off. Right now, I'm the happiest man in HK. The proxy server is the best invention since E-Bay.
Too bad I have to go to work. I think I'll quit my job.
Thanks so much!

That's absolutely brilliant!!
I've been trying to something very similar to listen to live cricket on UK radio but can't find a proxy that works for love or money.
Don't suppose you've come across a similar UK proxy server?
Or can you give some tips on how to find one?
Many thanks

Sensrule,
Glad to hear it is working for you. Great noght of hockey with Sens, Canucks, and Flames all winning!!
Briandwest,
I've never encountered radio websites blocked, but then again I've never looked for live cricket.
Do a google on Proxy UK and see what comes up. You may have to try a few. First hit I got is: http://www.daveproxy.co.uk/ Give it a try.

I feel like a fool - i've spent ages googling for 'Proxy server uk' and similar and never thought to try Proxy UK!!!
Some of the sport commentary on the BBC website is UK-only as they don't have worldwide broadcast rights. Next time there is one on I'll give it a try.
Thanks again
For future reference, there's a list of Proxies organised by country here: http://proxy.org/proxies_sorted.shtml

TMK,
I tried out some UK proxy servers and I couldn't navigate my way to any broadcast. Aren't the proxy servers for live TV?
I can always get online radio to work here in HK. I listened (before today's miracle, thanks to you) to Sens games on The Team 1200 in Ottawa, and it was never a problem.
I wish I could help more. You've probably tried this, but just access any radio station's website and click on the listen live icon.

Outerspace,
It runs either in the IE window or in VLC media player for me. You may want to try downloading VLC at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/. Keep in mind that it is a live stream of the games so it is only available during the game. Set your alarm clock and get up early:)
Briand, yes a bit of hit and miss with google search criteria.
Sensrule,
Proxy servers do various things but not made specifically for live TV. Allow you to get around country restrictions (censorship), some allow you to surf anonymously, or appear to be in a different location. So, a UK proxy won't help you with CBC as it still sees the proxy IP as outside Canada; you need one in Canada, and one that doesn't forward your IP to the provider or allow them to do a reverse lookup for original IP. I'm no expert in proxies, but this is my understanding anyway.
Gotta run, going to the game:)

TMK,
Actually, I was aware of that. I was trying to find a proxy for you in the UK for your cricket fix. Just returning the favour :)
Watching the first period. Think I'll call in sick.

It was me needing the cricket fix, but completely forgot to test it last night!
Will try to remember tonight.
Thanks for your help - these proxies are a bit tricky to get the hang of.

Sorry briandwest, I guess I should pay closer attention. That makes sense now, I did find it odd that a Canadian was watching cricket (it's like a Brit watching ice hockey, a rare occurence). I hope you find what you are looking for.
Do they not have any World Cup coverage here in HK?
Ed- Hockey Night in Canada live...it's a beautiful thing!

The only World Cup coverage is on a NowTV subscription channel.

Tried a number of UK Proxies last night and couldn't get any of them to play embedded radio streams on the BBC. The Media or Real player either loads in a new screen which bypasses the proxy or loads in the proxy but is unable to play the stream.
It was only Aus v NZ anyway!!

Hi,
Watched the Ottawa-New Jersey game on CBC.Ca. Visually it was fine, but the sound was absent. MY computer is not the problem, I checked. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
(I am based in Hong Kong)
Posted by Sensrule (386 days ago)
Well, now the whole thing doesn't work. I hope it's just a problem with CBC's streaming, and not a recurring problem.
Ed-have you had any problems?
Thanks!

Not sure - I havent had the time to watch...

I got BBC radio working with the UK Proxy Server http://babylonproxy.info/
but it was a bit hit and miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. There seem to be difficulties connecting to the streaming server but don't know if that is overload at the BBC end or something to do with the Proxy.
