Hi,

a french coming in HK... a basic question: is wine expensive overthere? what shall i expect (i am not stuck about french wine hey)?

am i better off placing 200 bottles in my container?
by the way, is there any food import restrictions for particulars.

the short answer is yes! 70% ish duty ...check out the prices at watsons wine to give yourself an idea

just went on watson's... indeed it is rather expensive.

But it is only bloody overpriced french wines!

anyway to find good australian or south afican stuff that should be more affordable (no french snobism, less transportation cost...)?

watsons also imports oz & sa wines but Im afraid its also expensive! You can also try

Also try the selection at Oliver's n City Super, but it's relatively expensive compared with Europe, unless you make friends with a wine supplier!

In 2000 we were warned by our shipping agent not to bring our 100+ bottles in to Hong Kong by container in case it was checked by Customs, in which case they would have hit us with the hefty tax. So we left them in the UK, and our container didn't get checked over. Sigh....

However, we did bring in a cabinet-full of (some already opened) bottles of spirits, wrapped up with foodstuffs.

the new supermarket in GUangzhou is the metreo it's a wholesale market with great prices on cases of wine some where cheaper then the retail prices in NOrth America great place for seafood lovers also and fantastic cheese selection.
