Just found out....
Posted by RachRobin (172 days ago)
My husband and I were told we had a very slim chance of conceiving due to a low/slow sperm issue. Took a test this morning (6 days late and usually regular as clockwork) and was shocked to see the little pink line appear! We are thrilled and a bit dumbfounded, and we have only recently arrived in HK for a minimum 2 year work contract. My main question to you all is where to from here??!! I have no idea how the health system works in HK. Can anyone reccommend a doctor in Wan Chai? I am not covered privately for maternity.
Are there any groups out there for first time mums - any reccommended reading?

Congratulations. Wonderful news!! We tried for years with the same issues. So I know how you feel.
Maternity in HK is expensive - very expensive if you go Private. From what I have read here the Public system is good though.
A healthy pregnancy depends on so many things though, so I would suggest you get yourself to an OB for a check up/confirmation. Many OB's in HK. We go to Lucy Lord (but she is relatively expensive I think. Can pay with credit card though which is nice. She has an office in Central, and also Sth Side - repulse Bay.
The other thing to note is that it is hard to get into hospitals here. Need to get that booked by week 8 if possible.
Best of luck!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!
it depends on if you want to be out of pocket anywhere up to $100,000 for delivery + $30,000 for all the check-ups.
this is not unrealistically high if you go private.
if you go public it will cost you maximum $1000 or so, for a normal, uneventful delivery. i was hospitalised 13 times with two pregnancies and i think our TOTAL cost was $5000 or so at a public hospital.
if you want to go public, you need to let us know where you are located so that we can try to figure out which is the hospital for your area.

Congrats!. The private doctors and hospitals are indeed very expensive if you are not covered. Friends of mine who were not covered have had good experiences with Queen Mary hospital for check-ups and delivery so perhaps you would like to contact them.

Hi, thankyou for your replies. We are living in Wan Chai, just off Queens Rd East near Ship St. I will definitely need to go public, so I am looking for an OB nearby. I have heard good things about the Queen Mary too, I just don't know where to start! Can I go there for my first check up to confirm the pregnancy?

Yes, just call the hospital to arrange your appointment with them. Please know that's your first appointment should usually be when you are around 6-8 weeks pregnant, but there is no harm in calling them already to arrange it all.

you need to call tsan yuk hospital. they handle the pre-natal stuff for QMH. if all is well with the pregnancy, they will refer you to a gov't clinic nearer to you. if you are higher-risk, then you with either go back to tsan yuk for all your appts or to QMH itself.
you do not need to find a private OB, you just need to go to a GP to get a letter stating that you are pregnant. then you can call Tsan Yuk. they will schedule your first visit, which is just registration... you won't see a dr. then they will make your first dr appt.
keep in mind that QMH and Tsan Yuk are part of HKU, so you will most likely see med students. it isn't usually a problem, but if you'd feel more comfortable seeing the "doctor" tell them that when you go for your appts. the wait might take a little longer, but you will see the dr in charge.
also, take a good book as sometimes the wait can take a couple of hours.
again, congratulations!

Wow pretty expensive in Hong Kong. I actually live in Shenzhen and had my pregnancy and gave birth here by CS and it only costed me around my check ups around rmb2000 to 3000 i'll say and when I gave birth it costed me rmb5000 CS private doctor, private nurse and private room.
And they can speak english too... and they are quite good.. never felt a thing when I was under their knife...
