How does one deal with stuffy and blocked nose? My poor baby has blocked nose since last few days and its interfering with her sleep and feeding. I am giving her saline drops as per the doc but its hardly of any help...
take bub into the bathroom and really steam up the bathroom as much as possible and then use the saline. Hopefully her nose should start to run and relieve at least some of blockage. Funnily enough in this humid country (although not so at the moment), a humidifier may do the trick. Unfortunately there isn't really much else accept for medicines like Dimetapp which she may be too young for. Good Luck
Hi smsm --The following have worked for us (my 7-month old just recovered from rhinitis):
1) Apart from the saline drops, I was able to suck out all the snot with the help of this little thing that I bought from the Eugene Club. It is a little canister with two rubber tubes: One tube goes into your mouth and the other tube (with a little rounded thing to protect baby's nose) goes into your baby's nostril (just barely). It works wonders --so MUCH better than the Pigeon rubber bulb-like thing that I got from Mannings.
2) There is also Olbas --a natural oil that I got from B2B. I use this very sparingly though. It works like Vicks. You just drop a few drops onto a piece of tissue paper and then stick it somewhere 'safe' --out of the reach of your baby, but near enough where she can still 'smell' it.
3) We use J&J Vapor Bath. The steam from the bath, coupled with the eucalyptus smell seems to help with the stuffy nose --if only during bath time. You can clear out quite a bit from the nose at this time.
Stop wasting so much water in the bathroom! Wing On sell of range of inexpensice Humidifiers (we call them Vaporisors back home). Will put steam in baby's room all through the night, helping unblock passage ways. You can also buy smelly oils to help.
We have found our invaluable as a natural, sure way to help block nose.
In addition we:
prop up one end of the cot with books so that baby sleeps on an angle (works for cough and runny nose) like they do in hospital when they are born (helps muck slide back down instead of sitting).
give a little anti-histamine (sorry for the spelling, doing this on the run) like the ones you give for hay-fever. I use one from back home which is suitable for babies under 1 so can't help you on a brand.
Put a little Vicks vapour rub on chest before bed.
Finally, the Dr gave a sea water nasle spray which we use when it gets really bad.
thanks everyone...its been 15 days and poor thing is still suffering from stuffy nose...i even used the medicinal nasal drops which my older ones doc had suggested from back home which works as long as u use them but u cant use them for more than 5 days..
am using vicks but not directly on her..can i use it on her chest..remember reading that its too strong to be used directly hence using it on things near her while sleeping...do correct me if am wrong..
