Boyfriend Snoring

Posted by OMG (455 days ago)
My boyfriend snores like crazy! He's been to the doctor those medicine doesn't work. Doc said if the snoring is going to continue my bf would hav to wear a metal mask (im not sure what it is my bf just tried to discribe it) and that is going to be uncomfortable - doctor says.
Now when my bf comes over to my place he sleeps on the floor in the living room. When i go to his i would sleep on the sofa. I m a very quiet sleeper.
We are going to move in together. We are thinkin of having 2 beds one in the bedroom and another one in the guest room.
But i don't know what we should do when we go for holiday. Honestly i can't afford to pay for 2 rooms and i just can't sleep when he's snoring. This may seem a little thing to you but it's been bothering me for such a long time already.
Last night he snored so much it woke me up at around 3am. I couldn't sleep after that this morning i had such a big headache.
I've tried to buy the medicine from Watsons and all, doesn't work.

I do have the same situation with you when i travel with my friends.
i am very sensitive to noise, especially snoring. So i have to get to bed first and sleep before my friends sleep. Sometimes, i cannot sleep and wake up, i use ear plug to reduce the noise, or i go to take a bath and rest in the bathroom. It does helps a bit.

Not sure what it's called but my old man wears a kind of plastic clip thing in his nose when he sleeps. An internet search should help you but my mother suffered for about 30 years before he found this thing a few years ago. Now if he does snore it is not loud enough to wake her - just a heavy breathing kind of thing. She reckons it's saved her sanity. Was pricey from memory.
Then there's always the trusty "tennis ball taped to the back" that stops them rolling over and sleeping on their back.

ummm is he overweight? as most overweight guys tend to snore as well.
Those plasters which he puts on his nose which opens up his nasal passages work as well.

We were in almost the same situation, but after reading an earlier thread on this forum we bought a 'mouthguard' on-line from Sleeppro and after two weeks the problem has completely vanished (fingers crossed!).
The mouthguard was easy to mould, is comfortable, there's a hole so you can still breathe through your mouth and it is well priced at about $350.
Can't recommend this enough, it's virtually saved our relationship!

OMG - heaps of stuff on the web but I'll check with my father over the weekend and find out the exact one he uses. I know he had to get it fitted and stuff - wasn't a "purchase over the counter" type of thing. Will get back to you.

Thansk Mpl and Superfical. I don't mind to pay anything..We both are totally sick and tired of sleeping on different beds.
Superfical - would be great if you can let me know where to buy that mask thing as well.
I will prob try both.

I think, given that his snoring sounds pretty bad, and I assume he's still of a young age, that your boyfriend should consult his GP or directly with an ENT doctor (i.e. specialist for this sort of problems).
There are different reasons for snoring, and it needs to be assessed properly to determine the reason and then the adequate course of action.
Some people even have sleep apnoea, meaning they stop breathing for a little while when they sleep. In the long term this is damaging for the cardiovascular system and a condition that needs to be taken seriously.
Some people may have a snoring problem accessible to surgery (not the case for all!!).
In the meantime, if he's not overweight, a major cause for snoring, do note that smoking is another big predisposing factor, and another big one is alcohol, which makes some tissues go all soft and floppy, therefore increases the risk of snoring. So he knows what to cut on...
Good luck!
PS: earplugs are good!

OMG - have a look at www.sleeppro.com, there's plenty of great info there. We bought the cheaper SleepPro 1 just to see whether it would be effective, but are now planning to upgrade to the SleepPro 2, as I gather that will be even more comfortable.
We ordered it on-line from the Australian office and it was delivered within a week.
Hope this works as well for you - happy resting!

The only thing he can do is to have a surgery. I did it 6 months ago and it helped a lot. It will not quarantee that you will get rid of snoring but most of the times it helps. Sometimes they will remove your tonsils, I had only the "soft palate" operated. So ask him to consult his doctor and ask for operation. The negative side of it is that about for two weeks after the operation you can only drink liquids and eat icecream because the throat is so sore. Any medicins wil not work and the nose strip will only help a little.
