Hi,
I am in similar situation as byebye Seattle. My husband and I will be arriving in Hanoi on 16th Feb and will need some short term (maybe 6 weeks - 2 months?)reasonably priced accommodation. We will be looking for work teaching but not dependent on it. However our budget is small. We are in Vietnam for until end of June so will want to spend time travelling.
Does anyone have any suggestions. Have searched the web and everything seems very expensive.
I have very little idea of cost of living. Probably around US$150. This is a guess. We are not looking for anything too grand, but would need a bathroom and cooking facilities. I don't want to stay in a hotel for this amount of time.
Hi. The difficulty with short-term accommodation is that the "normal" rental terms and payments in VN are a lot longer than in Aust. For example, they may want you to sign up for 1-2 years and pay bond plus 6 months rent in advance! Having said that, as you may be aware, VN can be a very negotiable place! It might be worth trying someone like Liem (on the byebyeseattle post), stating up front that you want a short lease, and seeing whether he can help you. Maybe you could say that you could help him find another tenant when you leave, by putting flyers on the local pinboards.
However, it is possible to find short-term rentals. I have seen some ads recently. My wife and I had a 3-month house rental the first time we came to Hanoi about 12 years ago. There is no denying though that most landlords would want a long-term rental.
Thanks for your replies. We will really have to play it by ear when we get there. Maybe we could share a place but not sure if a couple in their fifties would be considered compatible! We are getting very excited but the packing up here is very exhausting.
