Can anyone search their local directory for the telephone # of Asia Queen Hotel for me? As I nned to re-confirm my arrival date for airport pick up to the Hotel... Can't get any info on-line and it's weekend with agency closed...
My company has a complete database of all hotels in VietNam but unfortunately this property only opened in 2007 Feb and our Ha Noi update was completed in 2006 Dec!
The Asia Queen Hotel is at 16A2 Trung Yen Lane, Hoan Kiem District.
You don't need a taxi, but listen carefully! Your hotel is at the north end of HOAN KIEM LAKE in the 36 Streets area. It is rated as a new backpacker property.
AT THE AIRPORT locate the VietNam Airlines SHUTTLE BUS (every 20 or 30 minutes depending on time of day) that for USD$2 will transport you to the SOUTH end of Hoan Kiem Lake - a 5 minute walk from your hotel.
ON NO ACCOUNT TELL ANYONE at the airport which hotel you are staying at (a scam avoidance) just say you are meeting a friend at Hoan Kiem Lake.
In Ha Noi ONLY use DELUXE, VN TAXI or MAI LINH taxi - the rest have the fastest meters anywhere.
AVOID the Fansipan Travel Agency in your hotel - they are notorious crooks (as are Tonkin Travel [Mr. 20% service fee)).
Ha Noi is best known for monetary fraud and overcharging. Be aware of pick-pockets, too.
P.S. You do have your VN visa already? No visa - no entry.
Thanks for all the info, it is my first time to Hanoi and I will be there for 5 nights. One thing I wished to do is head to the beach at Halong to stay for a couple of days... Do you have any better suggestions? May be3 perhaps better place for beach vacation close by... If so, what is the best cheap way to get there... I am back packing and going on a limited budget...
Ha Long is a special place and I have been many times.
If it will be your only time I always suggest a better class of cruise such as the one offered by < http://tropical-sails.com >.
If you shoot on over to < www.travelfish.org > you will find there is great info on types of Ha Long tours. Also look at < http://www.travelfish.org/feature/76 >
You can usually leave your excess baggage in the Ha Noi hotel and pick it up when you return.
I think Hanoi Taxi is fairly reliable and their meters seem to be fine. There is an excellent bus system in Hanoi (and other cities). The challenge is to figure out how it works. Keep your eyes peeled for maps at bus stops and it used to be possible to to buy maps of the bus routes at the various book stores.
If you are interested in quality beach time, Ha Long is not be the best place - I don't know that anyone goes there for the beach - there must be some, but probably few. But it is definitely the place to go for a cruise on the bay.
Nevertheless, thru out my whole trip, especially by the tourist area such as Old center. Everyone tries to rip you off with hig prices even at the hotels... When you say no to their tours, they just tells you to get lost and ignores you for the rest of the stays...not even saying good bye when check out..
